June, 2004. The crew arrives at the Open Ocean Aquaculture site, nine miles from the New Hampshire shore. Divers prepare to enter the water and swim to one of the three cages at the site. The cage, usually at approximately 60 feet below the surface, has been brought up to about 30 feet for today's harvesting operations. These halibut were put into the cage in September, 2001 at an age of 1.5 years and an average weight of 100 grams. Their weight now averages between 3 and 3.5 kilograms. Divers use nets to catch the fish and group them in bags. Divers outside the net then haul up the fish and transfer them to the boat. These halibut will be used for various purposes. Some will be sold to seafood distributors, other will go to the University of Maine to be used for brood stock, and some will go to the New England Aquarium in Boston for display. When the cage is emptied, it will be cleaned and prepared for a cod growout experiment with Great Bay Aquaculture of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
