September, 2003 - Cod in nursery pens near the University of New Hampshire Coastal Marine Laboratory are prepared for transfer to the offshore cage nine miles from shore. A hose is lowered into the nursery pen. There are four nursery pens, each containing approximately 8,000 cod, each approximately 50 grams and close to 8 months in age. When the pumping system is started water and fish are sucked from the pen, down a slide and into one of two holds in the ship. With the ship's hold full of fish, the crew steam out to the UNH open ocean aquaculture site. The cage, usually submerged, is at the surface so that the transfer hose can be inserted inside the net. The process is now reversed and fish are pumped from the hold into the offshore cage. The cod will be in this cage for approximately 18 to 24 months. Researchers hope to grow the cod to a size of 2-3 kilograms each at which point the fish will be sold and test marketed as a new open ocean aquaculture product for New England.
