Giving fish more food then they need negatively impacts a farmís financial bottom line and, in certain circumstances, the environment. We use biotelemetry and video techniques to monitor fish physiology and behavior. The data we collect informs more efficient feeding practices that reduce the amount of uneaten feed.
We are also exploring alternative sources of protein for feed formulation. Currently, fish feed is made from fishmeal and oil, as well as vegetable-based fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. (Approximately 30 percent of global fishmeal production is used to feed fish; the remainder goes to pig and chicken feed.) The expansion of offshore aquaculture will rely on identifying sustainable protein sources that are nutritious and palatable to the fish.
